Elon Musk doesn't want you to know that his artificial intelligence company, xAI, is directly harming the Black community in Memphis, Tennessee. The data center powering Musk's new chatbot, Grok, is a facility built near historically Black neighborhoods and powered by methane gas turbines that release harmful pollutants into the air. Now, Musk wants to expand the project that is harming the environment and the innocent people living nearby.
This expansion is directly impacting the health and well-being of local communities, yet Musk and his company are pressing forward without regard for the majority Black residents who are suffering.

The data center is powered by 35 methane gas turbines, which spew harmful pollutants into the environment. These turbines are operating without legal permits, and the expansion of this project puts local residents at risk. Residents have been voicing their concerns for months, but Elon Musk's company has continued to ignore their pleas, exacerbating environmental racism in the process.
KeShaun Pearson, executive director of Memphis Community Against Pollution, says this is a direct human rights violation. "Elon Musk and xAI are violating our human right to clean air and a clean, healthy environment," Pearson stated. His brother, Justin J. Pearson, a Tennessee state representative for Memphis, called Musk's actions "environmental racism," adding that "they are abusing our community and exploiting us."
This environmental injustice cannot continue. The Black communities in Memphis deserve better. They deserve clean air, safe living conditions, and the right to have their voices heard. Elon Musk must stop this harmful expansion now and take responsibility for the damage already done.
