Demand Fair Wages and Record Expungement for California's Incarcerated Firefighters

  • destinatario: Governor Gavin Newsom and California State Legislature

With the devastating wildfires raging in Los Angeles, thousands of brave firefighters are doing everything they can to stop the spread and save lives. A surprising fact that many people are just now realizing, is that hundreds of these firefighters are incarcerated individuals. They are part of a "rehabilitation program," with the goal of working towards expunging their records.

Despite their bravery and hard work, these firefighters are often paid less than $10 a day, which falls short of the minimum wage. Additionally, the hurdles they face in expunging their records post-service often prevent them from continuing firefighting careers once released.  These firefighters are standing on the frontlines of the state's most devastating wildfires, risking their lives and providing critical firefighting support, and they deserve to be fairly compensated.

Sign the petition to demand Governor Newsom and the California State Legislature immediately increase the wages paid to these firefighters and remove the numerous hurdles to expunge their records!

The current compensation for incarcerated firefighters in California is a maximum of $10.24 per day, with an additional $1 per hour during emergencies – far less than the state's minimum wage and a fraction of what professional firefighters earn.

Additionally, the promise of reduced sentences and potential firefighting careers post-release is hindered by complex and restrictive expungement processes. These barriers do not align with the values of rehabilitation or fair treatment the program promises.

Incarcerated firefighters put their lives at risk alongside their freely employed counterparts, often with little recognition or reward. It's time for California to lead by example, ensuring that those who help save our communities from the ravages of fire are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve.

Sign this petition to call on Governor Newsom and the California Legislature to take immediate action to rectify this injustice!
