National Aboriginal Awareness Month June 2011-2012 Canada
Please support National Aboriginal Awareness Month in Canada June 2011-2012 by signing our petition.
Red Power United (Native Rights Movement) is Petitioning to make a National Aboriginal Awareness month in Canada.
We are not in opposition of Native Awareness Week / Aboriginal week or National Aboriginal Day. These events aim to dispel aboriginal stereotypes by bringing awareness to break down barriers through sharing traditions and culture of Aboriginal people.
We feel Native Awareness Week / Aboriginal week or National Aboriginal Day should be combined and extended to one month period under the name National Aboriginal Awareness Month. Aboriginal peoples in Canada comprise the First Nations, Inuit and Metis people.
National Aboriginal Awareness month should be a unified event across Canada in the month of June and should also be a proactive movement to provide education and awareness across Canada of past and current Aboriginal historic events and cultural traditions.
National Aboriginal Awareness month should include and or expand on traditional community events of:
Aboriginal art exhibits and Cultural display
Social dances *round dances, pow wows
Ceremonies * Sunrise Ceremony ect.
Traditional Story telling
Elder teachings
Traditional and Cultural teachings
Breakfasts, Lunches, Dinners, Feasts
Performances
Drumming, singing, dancing
Theatre and talent showcases
Talking circles
Films
Information kiosks
Aboriginal people and the environment
Including any regular local events
Canadian Aboriginal History and Historic events:
First Nations Histories
Inuit Histories
Metis Histories
Because the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada is a Historic event National Aboriginal Month should also create an equal partnership towards Truth and Reconciliation with mutual responsibility between Aboriginal people, Churches, Government and Canadian citizens by working towards an overall holistic and comprehensive healing approach to the affects of the Indian residential school legacy.
Aboriginal people, Churches, Government officials and Canadian citizens should have the opportunity participate and share in:
Ceremonies
Talking/Healing circles
Workshops
Creative Writing and Artistic Expression
Speaker bureaus
Individual community ideas
There should also be recognition and honouring of Aboriginal people in Community, Church and Government who in the past or present have dedicated themselves towards creating a better way of life for Aboriginal people.
Mentors
Teachers
Elders
Peers
Community workers
Agencies and organizations
