Are you and your family ready to face an emergency such as a flood, wildfire, earthquake or power outage? Do you have an emergency plan and an emergency kit to be self-sufficient for at least three days following a disaster? Disasters are on the rise, which is why it is important to know what to do in the event of an emergency or evacuation.

Hurricane Fiona made landfall on September 24, 2022, resulting in widespread flooding, damages to properties, buildings, and infrastructure across Eastern Canada. Hundreds of thousands of people experienced power outages.

In communities where storms and wind gusts of 100km/h and above are common, community members did not foresee the impact Hurricane Fiona would have for years to come.

In Channel-Port-aux-Basques and surrounding communities, wind gusts were recorded at 179km/h, wave heights of 17 metres, and a peak wave of 30 metres. The hurricane caused unprecedented damage, impacting more than 85 households.

The Canadian Red Cross team visited two potential shelter sites located in Rose-Blanche and Burnt Islands to discuss what updates were needed to make the sites a practical shelter in case of a future emergency. Community action kits, which include cots, blankets, and hygiene supplies were distributed to communities prior to the teams visit.

Now, if another hurricane comes their way, they will be prepared.
