Koalas Face Extinction

Chlamydia isn't just an embarrassing subject, it's an epidemic threatening an entire species with extinction.

In Australia's koalas, chlamydia causes respiratory infections, incontinence, pink eye and a number of other side effects, most notably, infertility. Chlamydia has left up to 40 percent of female koalas infertile, making the species vulnerable to extinction in as quickly as 30 years. Scientists estimate that there could be less than 43,000 koalas left in Australia today.

Under current Australian law, protecting koalas is up to the individual states. With koalas facing threats from chlamydia, human development and climate change, the Australian government should make this a federal issue.

Tell the Australian Prime Minister to classify koalas as vulnerable.
Prime Minister Julia Gillard,

Please make koala vulnerability a federal issue. By leaving the protection of the species to the states, koalas remain endangered by human development, sexually transmitted diseases, and climate change. Without comprehensive protection of koalas, they face extinction.

Scientists estimate that perhaps less than 43 thousand koalas are left in Australia today.
