On March 31, 2018, Bobby Bowers was doing his job as a greeter at the Walmart in Katy Mills, Texas. At approximately 8:45 PM he became aware of a homeless man seated right outside the entrance to the store. The man was shouting obscenities at the customers as they entered the store. His complaint ran something like this: "There is no f…ing Easter Bunny or Santa Claus. You've all been lied to"! After observing this for several minutes Bobby politely ask the man to leave because he was harassing and upsetting the customers. Several customers with children had already approached Bobby and complained.
After several fruitless attempts to get the man to leave, Bobby told the man he was calling the police. At this point the man swore at Bobby and said, "I will give you something to call the police about! I have a knife"! He then reached inside his back pack and lunged at Bobby. As he lunged he spat in Bobby's face declaring, "Now you will get AIDS and die just like me"! Bobby hauled back and hit the man square in the face. At this point other people intervened to separate the two men.
To make a long story short, Walmart fired Bobby for hitting the man. Bobby was told by the district manager that he was the aggressor and that he should have covered his face so the man could not spit on him. He was blamed by the manager for "escalating" the situation.
Bobby told me that he stood his ground because he feared for the children that were not more than twenty feet behind him. With all the craziness going on around us these days who is to say what this man might have done if Bobby had let him in the store? Then what? He would be blamed for cowardice if someone got hurt by this crazy man?
Spitting on someone is considered assault in Texas, especially with the intent to infect with the AIDS virus. Remarkably, Bobby declined to press charges because he was afraid it might make Walmart look petty. He was repaid for his loyalty by being fired. Bobby is 62 and in severe financial distress. He has no family in Houston and feels totally alone and abandoned. However, he is loved and adored by thousands of people in the Katy community for his kindness and good nature. He always had a kind word or cheerful greeting for everyone who came in the store.
I am asking everyone who visits this site to sign the online petition for Bobby. Also, please take a few minutes and call the corporate office of Walmart and tell them to give Bobby his job back.
For those of you in the Katy area, we are planning a future onsite protest at the store. please check back for updates.
Will our fight for Bobby solve world hunger or promote world peace? Obviously not. Bur we are all connected in ways that are not immediately obvious. If we let the corporate Weenies at Walmart squash a good man for protecting children & customers from a crazy man, then we are giving up and saying that we don't care if the world goes insane around us.
Is that really the future you want? If not, please help. You can do so by either donating your technical expertise, or making a financial contribution to support Bobby. I have set up a Go Fund Me link to help Bobby through this dark time. He has very little savings. Your help will enable him to survive. In any case, be sure to sign the online petition at justiceforbobby2018.com, contact Walmart, and send Bobby your message of support. God Bless.
PS...we are planning an onsite protest at the Walmart in Katy Mills on Saturday, May 26 from 4:00 to 6:00. Please visit justiceforbobby2018.com for updates and more information.
