Indonesia's largest zoo, Surabaya Zoo, has to euthanize a 15 year old emaciated female Sumatran tiger who was unable to recieve proper care due to lack of medical equipment and laboratory testing at the zoo that prevented veterinarians from examining her. Two weeks ago, a 13 year old male died from an undiagnosed digestive disorder. Sumatran tigers are the world’s most critically endangered tiger subspecies.
Neglect and a lack of funding for general animal welfare within the government controlled facility is one issue. Corruption is another; staff members are involved in illegal wildlife trafficking and uncontrolled breeding.
We ask the government to close this zoo and relocate the animals which holds many endangered animals that aew kept in dirty, cramped cages without proper veterinary care and vulnerable to illegal wildlife trafficking.
