A recently published study has brought attention to the plight of cloud forests in Mexico, and worldwide. According to the research, Mexico could lose up to 70% of its cloud forests due to climate change by the year 2080 if immediate action is not taken. Cloud forests are unique ecosystem and are at a greater risk from climate change than deforestation. In Mexico, researchers found that rising temperatures associated with climate change could wipe out almost 12,000 square kilometers of cloud forest. On top of this, most cloud forest in Mexico is presently unprotected, and therefore vulnerable to any kind of degradation. Researchers warn that immediate action must be taken to protect these beautiful, yet vulnerable, ecosystems.
A cloud forest is a tropical forest that grows at altitudes between 6,600 and 10,000 feet. They receive most of their moisture from fog and are home to many endemic and rare species, including orchids, hummingbirds, and amphibians. In Mexico, the area of Sierra de Juarez in Oaxaca is seen as a perfect candidate for protection because it has so far been resilient to climate change and contains 22 endangered species.
Mexico needs to take action before it is too late and protect cloud forests from climate change. By doing so not only will countless rare species be saved, Mexico will also be a leader for other countries with cloud forests threatened by climate change.
