Video footage has emerged of cows being slowly bludgeoned to death with sledgehammers in Vietnamese abattoirs. On their knees with their heads lowered, they are too afraid or exhausted to protect themselves or fight back. These animals, whose lives ended in terror and sustained agony, were exported from Australia. Now Australia's Labor party is calling for an independent Office for Animal Welfare to represent the needs of animals without a conflict of interest. Please sign this petition to support this step forward for animal rights.
Animals Australia secretly filmed the cruel killings and have since called for the Agriculture Department to be stripped of its regulatory role. They say that the department is impossible conflicted because of its duty to promote the live cattle trade. “Nobody can claim they didn’t know this was happening – the exporters knew, the department knew and the minister knew,” Animal Australia’s campaign director Lyn White said. “Some exporters think they are above the law and they have good reason to.”
Please sign this petition to support a call for an independent Office for Animal Welfare. If we can get enough signatures, the government will realise that improved animal welfare is really important to the general public. Let's give our voice to those who can't speak for themselves!
