Five dogs, henceforth called The California Five, were recently surrendered from a possible abusive situation in Stockton, California. There were accusations that the dogs were being rented out for sex. Stockton Animal Control and the police department were called by one resident and asked to investigate. When nothing was done, a rescue was contacted and the dogs were surrendered to the rescue.
A veterinarian examination of two of the dogs, Ava and Emma, revealed trauma consistent with sexual abuse. Animal Control and the police were notified and everyone waited. Finally, the media was informed of the case. Their report involved an interview with the veterinarian clinic, as well as interviews with the person who had owned the dogs and those who rescued them. Stockton Animal Control refused to comment, stating it was an on-going investigation and that, to their knowledge, there was never another case in Stockton like this. They were clear, this was the first case of alleged sexual abuse against an animal that had been reported.
Six days passed before Animal Control picked up the dogs from the veterinarian office and did a forensic exam. It should be noted that after a sexual assault, preservation of the evidence is paramount to being able to bring charges. Any forensic evidence that might have been available will be gone after several days, leaving only the trauma. With dogs, it is rare to find forensic evidence to prove rape, unless it is gathered immediately after an assault.
Further, the man who surrendered the dogs to rescue admitted the dogs were sexually abused. He denied having received money for the services, but a good Samaritan witnessed the exchange and came forward.
Of course, the VERY LATE forensic exam revealed nothing. However, the trauma these dogs suffered is consistent with rape … and that is where the investigators need to start. If the dogs have injuries consistent with rape, and all other causes are ruled out … then that leaves rape. Emma, a little terrier mix, was spayed and her uterus showed massive signs of trauma. Ava was pregnant when she was rescued, and most likely because of the severe trauma she suffered, all 11 babies were delivered by C-Section with massive neurological damage. They all died within the first hours of birth, never crying or moving. Lobo was never examined for signs of possible rape. The other two dogs are David, a male Boxer mix and Isabella, an 8-year-old Pit Bull who came with three puppies. The three puppies were surrendered along with Isabella so there are actually 8 dogs involved in this alleged “sex ring.”
It did not take a lot of investigating on our part to immediately find two other cases of alleged bestiality in Stockton, California. This is true despite the claim by Animal Control that there was never another case reported. On 23 February 2016, a concerned citizens spoke to the City Council in Stockton, California, detailing the sexual assault of a small dog found wandering the streets, pregnant and in distress. Another case documented in November of 2016, in Stockton, CA, involved a man who was arrested for “Lewd acts upon a child.” His arrest record also has a charge of sexual assault of an animal.
These two cases show the “California 5” is not the first case brought before the authorities in Stockton, CA. Further, we can find absolutely no evidence of a serious investigation against alleged animal rapists by the Stockton, CA authorities.
We the people are appalled that this crime is so readily dismissed by those sworn to serve and protect. We ask that a serious investigation be tarted. While the law in Stockton leaves a lot to be desired, there is a law in place against this crime. Thus, there should be an investigation.

Eagle’s Den Rescue operates out of Clarkton, NC and has taken in several victims of rape from several states in the United States. Two of our rescues who presented with injuries consistent with rape, in fact, came from CA. While we have lost three dogs because of their injuries, the majority are alive, well and enjoying quality lives after a lot of vet care. Until the rape of an animal is taken seriously and the criminal punished, this will continue to happen.
Bestiality is NOT a bad joke that should be laughed at in back rooms. It is a serious offense that causes terrible trauma and damage to the victim. Further, studies have proven time and again that serial killers and sexual sadists often start with animals before moving on to humans … often children. Those who attack the “voiceless animals” and get away with it, will be more inclined to attack “voiceless children.”
As a civilized, caring people, we should always stand up and speak for those who have no voice.

“The question is not, Can they reason? Nor, Can they talk? But, Can they suffer?” ~Jeremy Bentham~
“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” ~Mahatma Gandhi~“Non-violence leads to the highest ethics, which is the goal of all evolution. Until we stop harming all other living beings, we are still savages.” ~Thomas A. Edison~
“Life is as dear to a mute creature as it is to a man. Just as one wants happiness and fears pain, just as one wants to live and not die, so do other creatures.” ~His Holiness The Dalai Lama~

Also, while Stockton, CA Animal Control has stated that there has never been another case where sexual assault of an animal was claimed, we found two other cases within thirty minutes of searching. One case was addressed before the City Council on 23 February 2016. The speaker was asking that the authorities investigate the case of a small, pregnant dog found wandering the streets of Stockton, CA. A veterinarian’s exam revealed injuries consistent with rape. Then, as now, there seemed to be no serious investigation into the allegations.
The second case we found in Stockton was in November of 2016. A man was arrested and charged with “forcible lewd acts upon a child,” “sodomy of a victim under 10 years of age,” “oral copulation of a victim under 10 years of age,” “incest,” and also … “sexual assault on an animal.” These cases were discovered after only 30 minutes of searching, so there may well be more.
We are appalled that this crime is so readily dismissed by those sworn to serve and protect. We ask that a serious investigation be begun. While the law in Stockton leaves a lot to be desired, there is a law in place against this crime. It is Penal Code 286.5
“California Penal Code § 286.5
Sexually assaulting animal; misdemeanor
Any person who sexually assaults any animal protected by Section 597f for the purpose of arousing or gratifying the sexual desire of the person.”
Further:
“Penal Code 597 PC, California's general animal cruelty law, is a wobbler. A "wobbler" is a charge that the prosecutor may choose to file as either a misdemeanor or a felony, depending on
1. the specific facts of your case, and
2. your criminal history.
Considering the circumstances of this case and the harm done to the animals, as well as the tendencies we have seen of the authorities to be dismissive, we believe this case should set a precedent and send a message that sexual assault of an animal is NOT acceptable. Please find cause to charge this as a felony under Penal Code 597.
