Nationalise City Link parcel delivery firm to save over 2,000 jobs

  • da: Beth Granter
  • destinatario: Vince Cable - Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills

More than 2,000 staff from UK parcel delivery service City Link are to be made redundant on New Year's Eve. City Link and its financial backers will not have to pay redundancy payments and the staff will have to apply to a government scheme. The remaining 700+ staff will be retained only short term to wind down the company.

These jobs could be saved if the company is taken under national public ownership, as was done with many UK banks recently. This would be in the public interest, not only for the individuals and their jobs, but so that we have a national parcel delivery service run as a required service and not for profit.

The government has previously said it was unable to intervene in the administration process, although the Secretary of State for Business, Vince Cable said he would meet the RMT union in the New Year.

Please sign this petition to show the government that these jobs should be saved, by nationalising the company.

Dear Vince Cable, City Link has mismanaged its company resulting in its financial failure. The company is making over 2,000 staff redundant. Please step in and save these jobs by nationalising the company immediately. Do not wait until the new year to meet with the union to discuss a solution as this will be too late. Nationalising City Link is in the public interest, not only by saving the individuals' jobs, but so that we have publicly owned parcel delivery services - run as efficient required services and not for profit. If you can nationalise banks why can't you nationalise this parcel company?

Today Thursday 5 November and tomorrow, three directors of logistics firm City Link are before the courts. The three are expected to set out why they believe they are not guilty of the charge of failing to consult with staff ahead of the Christmas 2014 collapse of the company. Read more from RMT.

Vince Cable has finally responded to our petition. Unfortunately he doesn't agree that nationalising City Link would have been the best solution to save people's jobs. Read his full response here.

Some good news. The closure of City Link is being investigated by the Commons Select Committee. RMT gave evidence on 13 January and owner Jon Moulton was questioned on 27 January. You can read the transcript of these sessions here. On 4 February the Administrators will be questioned. Hopefully the investigation will reveal those responsible for the job losses and they will be held to account.

Thank you to all who signed this petition, which was delivered to Vince Cable. Your support meant a lot to City Link workers.
Unfortunately 2,400 City Link staff were fired on 31 December 2014. RMT union said, “RMT will continue to advise and represent o‎ur members caught in this corporate failure. The City Link Christmas destruction is an act of industrial vandalism that shames our nation while the government looked on and offered nothing but hollow words."

Thank you for signing my petition. We now have over 20,000 signatures and some important news.

Yesterday Vince Cable spoke with RMT union. He made it clear he will not be acting on the call for direct Government intervention.

However, the fight is not over. Caroline Lucas MP has now signed the petition and pledges to raise the issue in Parliament next week.

Today at 3PM there will be a major protest at City Link Coventry, CV3 4PA.

The fight for justice for City Link workers goes on.
