Protect Our Profession: Amend the Engineers' Act for Inclusivity and Fairness

Who is affected?
The proposed Engineers' Act in Uganda affects a wide range of professionals within the engineering community, including engineers, technologists, and technicians. Many of these individuals are recent graduates eager to enter the workforce, as well as seasoned professionals who have dedicated their careers to advancing engineering practices in Uganda. The current draft of the Act, however, poses significant barriers to entry and participation, particularly through its lengthy registration requirements and inadequate provisions for gender representation. This not only marginalizes potential new entrants into the profession but also stifles diversity and innovation within the field.

What is at stake?
If the Engineers' Act is passed in its current form, it will perpetuate a system that favors established organizations and individuals, limiting the voices and opportunities of many qualified professionals. The lengthy registration period could deter young engineers from pursuing their careers, leading to a shortage of fresh talent in the industry. Additionally, the lack of gender mainstreaming will hinder efforts to create a more inclusive engineering workforce, which is essential for driving innovation and addressing the diverse challenges faced by our society. Ultimately, the effectiveness and growth of the engineering profession in Uganda are at stake, impacting not just professionals but also the broader community that relies on engineering solutions for development.

Why is now the time to act?
Now is the critical moment for action as the Engineers' Act is currently tabled in Parliament and could be passed without further amendments. We must unite as a community to advocate for necessary changes that reflect the needs and aspirations of all engineering professionals in Uganda. By signing this petition, we can demonstrate to lawmakers that we are a collective voice demanding a fair, inclusive, and effective Engineers' Act. The time to act is now; our future as a thriving engineering community depends on it. Let us stand together to ensure that our profession is represented accurately and equitably in this vital legislation.
