The illegal trade in orangutans in Indonesia continues to be an activity that is decimating the remaining populations of the species. While it is frequently a byproduct of logging and clear cutting for plantations, the illicit trade requires the killing of the mother orangutan to obtain the infant ape. It is estimated that for every orangutan orphan that is sold at the marketplace on Java, Bali or a foreign land, six to eight orangutans die in the process. This horrific trade must stop if we are to insure the survival of wild orangutans.

Recognize the illegal trade in orangutans in Indonesia continues to be an activity that is decimating the remaining populations of the species. Fewer than 6,500 remain in Sumatra where they are critically endangered, and fewer than 60,000 remain on Borneo where they are endangered.
We are also aware that the illicit trade requires the killing of the mother orangutan to obtain the infant ape. It is estimated that for every orangutan orphan that is sold at the marketplace on Java, Bali or a foreign land, six to eight orangutans die in the process.
We understand that the illegal trade is frequently a byproduct of logging and forest conversion to estate plantations. Furthermore, mature orangutans have been killed as pests within existing plantations and their offspring taken to be sold.
We acknowledge the species are protected from commerce under international agreement (CITES) and that the government of Indonesia has passed legislation protecting orangutans from this trade and other forms of brutality. Nevertheless, the trade continues to be a threat to the survival of the species.
We, therefore, support and encourage the government of Indonesia, at all levels, to take whatever action necessary to stop the illegal trade in orangutans by vigorously enforcing the laws of Indonesia that protect the species.
