Update: Sept. 11, 2012. An appropriate date to be hit with the devastating news that an organization calling itself Save Our Crops Coalition has cooperated with Dow and withdrawn its objection to the approval of this dangerous poison. SOCC is now included as a target of this petition.
Pesticide Action Network (PAN) says RoundUp's failure has cost Midwest and Southern farmers dearly, creating fast-spreading super-weeds that break machinery and disrupt irrigation. But instead of abandoning this losing strategy, Dow hopes to gain by making things even worse.
Dow plans to get its 2, 4-D-resistant corn on the market this year, with soy and cotton following. These three crops cover over a million acres and drive the pesticide market, says PAN. "This dangerous and antiquated herbicide shouldn't be on the market, and we certainly should not be giving Dow license to profit from driving up use."
TELL USDA, STOP Poisoning our Food! Do NOT approve 2,4-D-resistant crops.
We, the undersigned, support PAN's efforts to stop this further assault on our food and our environment.
2,4-D resistant corn will repeat the same failed approach to farming taken by Monsanto's "RoundUp Ready" corn that is costing Midwest and Southern farmers and the rest of the planet dearly.
Along with PAN:
"We urge USDA to reject Dow's petition for approval of its 2,4-D resistant seed lines (whether corn, soy or cotton) and to devote more attention instead to research and development of safe and smart 21st century ecological approaches to weed management."
We are very disappointed to learn that SOCC has colluded with Dow to support this proposed poisoning of our food, our land, our people and out environment.
We thank you for your attention to our requests and plead with you to please not repeat the mistakes of the past by approving 2,4-D-tolerant GE crops.
