Urge Ghana to Ban the Trade of the African Grey Parrot to Help Stop the Species Going Extinct in the Wild

The African Grey Parrot is a popular choice as a pet but sadly, this coupled with the loss of its natural habitat in Ghana has pushed the species to the edge of extinction in the wild, according to a report on Mongabay.com

The report states: " In Ghana, close to 99 percent of African grey parrots (Psittacus erithacus) have disappeared since 1992, largely due to unrestricted trade, researchers have found. Once abundant, these birds are now extremely rare in the country."

The story also found that loss of key habitat, specifically large trees for nesting, has meant the parrot has been left without anywhere to breed.

As a result, experts have suggested the African Grey Parrot should be placed on Appendix 1 of CITES in an effort to save it from going extinct in the wild.
