Australia – Stop Nuclear Waste Dump in Northern Territories

Australia is planning a brand-new nuclear waste dump in a distant corner of the Northern Territories. It is also one that would, according to conservations, illegally violate the rights of indigenous peoples.

The Mukaty dump, near Tennant Creek, apparently has not received full permission from the indigenous communities of the area, leaving Australia at risk of breaching a UN agreement on the issue.

Because of the remoteness of the site, risks of accidents transporting waste to the site are also greatly increased. Campaigners say alternative sites have not been properly considered.

It seems the government just wants to have a dump conveniently situated a long way from power centres, paying insufficient attention to social and environmental concerns.

Tell the Australian government to call a halt to this controversial plan.

We the undersigned ask that you call a halt to plans for a nuclear waste dump near Tennant Creek in the Northern Territories.

It seems that indigenous communities of the area have not given full permission for this dump, and in fact there is a great deal of local opposition. Going ahead at this point puts Australia at risk of breaching the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. There are also environmental concerns associated with the remoteness of the site.

Please put plans for this controversial dump on hold until full, legal evaluation, including proper consideration of better alternatives, has gone ahead.

Thank you for your attention.
