San Francisco Police shot and killed a homeless man named Luis Gongora after only 30 seconds on the scene. There was no attempt at de-escalating the situation, instead police shot Luis with multiple bean bags and seven bullets, the sounds of which are caught on tape. This kind of excessive force is horrifying. If we don't stand up for Luis, no one will.
Add your name here to demand that DA George Gascon prosecute the police officers responsible for Luis's death.
Police were called to the Mission District area by a homeless outreach team because Luis seemed confused and agitated. Like many homeless people, Luis had a knife for self defense. But witnesses say he didn't have it out at the time of the shooting. If the police did have Crisis Intervention Training, they obviously didn't use it. Even though Luis didn't speak English well, he understood the situation well enough to follow police orders to "get down". In fact, he was lying flat on the sidewalk, no threat to anyone, when police shot and killed him.
Two days after Luis's death, police spent the night using knives to ruin the tents on Shotwell Street where Luis lived. The following morning, Luis's friends commemorated him among the police destruction. Both others experiencing homelessness and those with roofs over their heads met to sign their names to Luis' tent, which had been fiercely protected through the night. By all accounts Luis was a great guy who always helped those around him. He was often seen kicking a soccer ball against a wall and now a soccer ball is affixed to a telephone pole in memoriam.
Luis's death was completely preventable and highlights the situation the homeless community in SF commonly faces, including blatant police brutality and discrimination.I have lived in the Bay area my whole life and this incident doesn't make me fear the homeless population, it makes me fear the police force's lack of accountability.
Will you sign my petition to call for a criminal trial against the police officers who murdered Luis?
