Tell Sheriff Vallario Domestic Violence Victims Deserve Justice, Not Deportation
Colorado women who report domestic abuse in Garfield County run the risk of being reported to ICE, even though state law mandates that no one in a domestic violence case should be reported as a suspected illegal immigrant until after they're convicted.
Sheriff Vallario has refused to discuss his policies with the ACLU or local advocacy groups fighting for victim's rights. And yet he still tells women they shouldn't be afraid to report if they're victims of a crime!
This isn't just against Colorado state law - it puts the very lives of undocumented women at risk. Stand up for the victims of domestic violence today and let Sheriff Vallario know we won't back down until all women are able to see their abusers face justice!
Dear Sheriff Vallario,
It's clear from your statements to the media that you care about protecting the victims of domestic violence from their abusers. You are obviously passionate about defending the law and protecting those who have suffered at the hands of a loved one.
That's why I'm asking you to reconsider the ACLU's request that the Garfield County Sheriff's office refrain from reporting suspected illegal immigrants until after a conviction has been made in domestic violence cases.
I understand that you may have differences of opinion from the ACLU, but now is not the time to let politics get in the way of doing what's right. Women in the most vulnerable positions simply aren't going to come forward and report their abusers if they are afraid they might be deported.
Women's lives are at stake, which is why I am urging you to reconsider your office's policies to be more in line with other Colorado counties.
