Tell India: Stop Trying to Silence NGOs
A new effort by the government of India could shut down non-governmental organisations (NGOs) across the country that work every day to protect the environment, safeguard human rights, and spur rural development.
Last year, a government-funded Intelligence Bureau (IB) report on NGOs falsely alleged that the country's economic development was being stalled by internationally-funded activism. While the problem has been brewing for months, things recently came to a head when the Ministry of Home Affairs froze bank accounts of Greenpeace India, putting a complete stop to their campaigns.
It's shocking that the government would choose such underhanded tactics to silence those working to provide a voice to the voiceless. Meanwhile, the country's leaders have made no efforts to stop bribery and corruption at all levels of government, which are the real threat to India's international image and economic future.
It's time India's elected leaders began representing the people instead of protecting their own coffers.
Sign your name and tell Prime Minister Modi and India's leaders that you support the work of NGOs and call for an end to the efforts to silence their crucial campaigns.
