Only 25% of pets in the US are adopted from shelters. The rest are a horribly profitable amalgamation of breeders, many of them puppy mills and hoarders. It's especially easy for people to purchase high end, poorly bred animals off free site Craigslist. Puppy Mill breeders in states like Missouri make large profits off such sites. Ending the sale of pets through Craigslist and etc will help diminish the mass rescues we at shelters must do and help to facilitate adoptions instead of purchases.
