On 10/16, Amazon showed up unexpectedly, a day early, with a package. We live on a very secluded farm, so our dogs are allowed out in our "yard". We were not notified Amazon was coming, so the dogs were out. When they arrived in an unmarked personal vehicle, the dogs went over to say hi. They stood by the passenger side of the vehicle, tails wagging, until the passenger (delivery person) got out. When she did, she started screaming. I headed for the door, as the driver got out and ran around the side of the car, and kicked my Jakey. He then chased the dogs as they ran toward me, attempting to punch them and throwing rocks at them.
I reported the incident.
Jakey started declining right away. Not eating, not wanting to go outside, acting depressed. I took her to the vet, and they believed there was some bruising and PTSD.
Monday 10/31, I got home from work to Jakey stumbling around, dizzy and scared. She had peed on the floor, which is not her normal. We rushed to the ER vet.
Her abdomen was full of blood. When the driver kicked her, the trauma caused a mass on her liver to open and bleed.
Surgery would have left a 50% survival rate and 2-3 month life expectancy post-op. We opted to bring her home on hospice, give her the best day we could on Tuesday, 11/1, and the vet came out that afternoon to euthanize her at home.
I am gutted. This dog was our LIFE. She mothered my kids, the other animals, everybody. She worshipped everyone she met, and everyone worshipped her in return.
This still doesn't even seem real to me. For the first 3 years of her life, she came with me to work and worked alongside me as a therapy dog, comforting sick patients. For the past 6 years, she has loved my kids to the end of the world and back, and has been here for the entirety of the younger 3 kids lives. We don't even know how to do life without our Jakey.
The delivery person still has her job.
I want Amazon to fire the delivery person, give the name of the abuser for criminal charges to be filed, and create a plan for better vetting of, and training for, drivers, to insure this NEVER happens to another family. Until that happens, STOP USING AMAZON!!!
