Tell the GOP No to Virginia Foxx as Chair of the Subcommittee on Higher Ed!
Republican Congresswoman Virginia Foxx (NC) famously displayed her insensitivity and homophobia when she said, in front of Matthew Shepard's mother, that his gruesome torture and murder by two homophobic men was a "hoax." She also voted against the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr Hate Criimes Prevention Act of 2009, which was ultimately signed by President Obama.
Despite her experience as a college professor and college president, she supports for-profit colleges, many of whom have been investigated by Senator Harkin for exploiting and ripping off the students they enroll, and doesn't see any value in enabling college-bound youth to attend two-year colleges as a step to a four-year degree. In short, she opposes every program President Obama has named, including his initiative to boost college graduate rates in the next decade.
Her links to for-profit colleges and the companies that run them (and have donated to her campaigns) means she has a vested interest that may affect her lawmaking.
Tell Speaker Boehner to remove this insensitive, homophobic woman from a position where she affects young people headed to college.
Dear Speaker Boehner,
We, the undersigned, are appalled that an out-of-touch right-wing ideologue who opposed a key hate crimes law and approves of for-profit colleges that rips off students will chair the House Subcommittee on Higher Education.
We need a person who understands the needs of college students, regardless of socioeconomic status or sexual orientation.
73% of American people supported the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr Hate Crimes Prevention Act. By opposing this, Virginia Foxx revealed not only her intolerance of a diversity of college students, but also how out-of-touch you are with what Americans believe in.
Please remove Virginia Foxx as the Chair of the Subcommittee on Higher Education.
