She was the world's most famous wolf. But the unrivaled leader of Yellowstone's beloved Lamar Valley Pack, known as "06 Female," crossed Yellowstone's park boundary into Wyoming and was heartlessly shot and killed by a hunter in 2012. Her pack never fully recovered. Today, there's a very real possibility that more wolves could once again be gunned down anytime, anywhere throughout most of the state. NRDC is racing to the U.S. Court of Appeals to prevail on the government to save these magnificent animals from slaughter — and we need activists like you to help mobilize a massive public outcry demanding immediate federal action in defense of wolves.
In 2014, NRDC went to court and — thanks to the support of activists like you — won a ruling that kept Wyoming's wolves on the endangered species list until the state put forth a credible plan to protect them. But Wyoming has failed to act. Yet the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is now appealing the court's decision. The agency wants to hand those wolves back over to state control and a cruel wolf "management" plan that turned 85 percent of the state into a kill zone for wolves. As NRDC prepares for a showdown in the U.S. Court of Appeals, please call on the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to drop its appeal and give Wyoming's wolves a fighting chance at recovery. Nearly a century ago, a relentless wolf extermination campaign destroyed every last one of these magnificent animals inside Yellowstone National Park and across the Northern Rockies. In the 1990s, the inspiring reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone brought back the iconic howl of wolves to America's greatest national park. But Wyoming's wolves need continued federal protections to fully recover.
