Idaho officials want to kill hundreds of wolves and Montana is likely to follow suit. Wyoming is pursuing a shoot-on-sight wolf "management" plan.
Clearly, our work to ensure a long-term recovery for these magnificent animals is far from over.
Wolves deserve our respect and greatly need our care. Urge Interior Secretary Ken Salazar to make things right for wolves in Greater Yellowstone and the Northern Rockies by pursuing a science-based plan for long-term recovery of wolves.

As a supporter of Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund and someone who cares about the future of wolves in Greater Yellowstone and the Northern Rockies region, I am writing today to urge you to provide critical leadership in moving toward a collaborative, science-based recovery plan for wolves.

I hope that you will use the recent court decision that reinstates federal protections for Northern Rockies wolves as an opportunity to chart a new course for wolves in the region. It is time for all of the stakeholders -- including state officials, livestock producers, conservationists and others -- to work together in the region to develop a recovery plan using the best available science that ensures a long-term, sustainable future for wolves in the region.
The ultimate goal of wolf recovery must be the achievement of a viable, interconnected wolf population in the Northern Rockies that is managed like other wildlife by the states. Successful, long-term recovery can be achieved by incorporating the best available science to determine biological recovery; ensuring that state management plans are adequate to prevent decline of wolf populations once federal protections are removed; and employing a robust and transparent regulatory process that allows for full public input.
Once we achieve this, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service should propose delisting through an open and transparent process to allow maximum public participation.
I urge you to move forward on these critical steps to ensure the long-term recovery of wolves in Greater Yellowstone and Northern Rockies.
