Attention Shoppers! Wal-Mart Workers Need a Voice
Does a loaf of bread cost less for women?
Wal-Mart seems to think so.
Wal-Mart is not only the world's largest retailer, but it is also the largest corporation and private employer in the United States. As such, it sets the standard for wages and labor practices throughout the entire retail industry.
But what kind of a model is Wal-Mart when women employees are concentrated in lower-paying jobs, are paid less than men on the same job, and are less likely than men to advance to management positions? These gender patterns persist even though overall women have more seniority, lower turn over rates, and higher performance ratings in most Wal-Mart positions than their male counterparts.
Get the Facts:
- Wal-Mart employs fewer women in management today than its current competitors did in 1975!
- 65% of Wal-Mart employees are women; those working hourly jobs annually take home $1,100 less than men.
- On average it takes men 2.86 years to get promoted to assistant manager, yet it takes women 4.38 years to accomplish the same task.
Wal-Mart has built an international retail empire while ignoring women's rights to equal pay and equal opportunity.
Sign this petition and tell Wal-Mart's President and CEO, why you think it is time for Wal-Mart to end its discrimination practices.
Dear Mr. Lee Scott,
I live in CITY, STATE, and am very concerned about Wal-Mart's alleged gender discrimination practices. Wal-Mart is the world's largest retailer. It is also the largest corporation and private employer in the United States. As such, it sets the standard for wages and labor practices throughout the entire retail industry.
Wal-Mart should be a corporate leader in gender equality in the workplace. But instead, women employees at Wal-Mart are concentrated in lower-paying jobs, are paid less than men, and are less likely to advance to management positions than men are. These gender patterns persist even though women have more seniority, lower turn over rates, and higher performance ratings in most Wal-Mart positions than their male counterparts.
In the face of the largest US sexual discrimination lawsuit, you have the option to end all practices of sexual discrimination in your corporation and prove to be the caring company you claim to be.
I urge you to choose the path of corporate responsibility and equality.
Sincerely,
[your name]
