Urge President Obama to Remove the Atlantic Ocean from the 2017-2022 Oil and Gas Drilling Leasing Plan
The Obama Administration is poised to make decisions to allow exploration for offshore oil that will harm millions of marine animals, and open the Atlantic Ocean to drilling for the first time in over 30 years! Now is the time to tell the Obama Administration to exclude the Atlantic Ocean from the plan.
Dear President Obama:
The Atlantic Ocean and the fragile coastal fringe are critically important.
It is home to HUNDREDS of species of fish and birds, marine mammals and turtles including some of the most endangered species on earth, as well as home to millions of people and businesses, offers enjoyment for millions of visitors, and they all depend on a CLEAN ocean.
The Atlantic Ocean must NOT be opened to oil and gas exploration or drilling. Oil spills and pollution anywhere in the Atlantic Ocean will be impossible to contain. Ocean currents, such as the Gulf Stream, and winds can spread pollution for miles from the site of the leak or spill.
Fossil fuels are causing CLIMATE CHANGE -- causing sea level rise, ocean warming and acidification, and air pollution that sickens people. Animals and plants are also suffering. The planet is becoming unsuitable for healthy living. You were a leading voice at the Climate Change Conference in Paris. You also said:
“Now we’ve got to accelerate the transition away from old, dirtier energy sources. Rather than subsidize the past, we should invest in the future.” President Obama, State of the Union Speech 2016
President Obama, we urge you to remove the Atlantic Ocean from the 2017-2022 Oil and Gas Drilling Leasing Plan.
