Support New Animal Rights Bill in India!
India has an international reputation for compassion towards animals, but the country's animal rights laws are stuck in the past. A new bill could change that.
‘India Unites For Animals — A movement against animal abuse’ is pushing for stronger fines and penalties against animal cruelty. 59 Indian cities and 24 other cities are joining together to fight for the cause.
The nation's current animal welfare act, passed in 1960, would only fine 10 to 50 rupees (about 15 to 75 American cents) for crimes against animals. In 1960, 50 rupees was a considerable amount, but times have changed.
India has seen terrible crimes against animals over the past year. Last July, two medical students recorded and published a video that shows one of them throwing a dog from a two-story building. The current fines are ridiculously lenient for such actions.
The new Animal Welfare Act would enforce stronger fines and penalties for animal cruelty which would truly punish abusers. Crimes against animals have no place in a civilized society. Please sign the petition to urge Indian Parliament to pass the Animal Welfare Act!
I am concerned that India's current animal rights laws are too lax for some of the horrible crimes against animals that the country has seen in recent years.
