The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) has passed a monumental regulation to increase rules and limits on the trading of 54 more species of sharks. Now, almost all shark species traded internationally for their fins will be under the oversight of CITES, a huge rise from only 25% prior to this conference. The historic vote comes at a crucial moment for our oceans and their biodiversity. Over one third of shark and ray species are at risk of extinction, and ocean-going (pelagic) sharks have plummeted, with population losses of over 70% in just 50 years. It is more important than ever that sharks are formally protected in international agreements!
