Fix the Cold Spring Park Trail!

Whereas,
- The trail has significantly eroded in the 35 years since it was built;
- Several spots remain perpetually muddy or icy;
- Exposed roots and rocks trip walkers and joggers;
- The trail is heavily used— 365 days a year—by hikers, joggers, dog-walkers, cross-country-skiers, birders, exercise trail users, both high school track teams, parents and kids;
- Improving hiking trails was the #1 priority for community parks & rec in a statewide survey by Mass. Office of Energy & Environmental Affairs;
- Newton Parks & Rec has capital budgets for upgrading tennis courts, playgrounds, playing fields, exercise equipment, but no capital budget for trail improvements;

We, the undersigned ask the mayor, City Council and Parks & Rec Dept to create a capital budget and expedite improving the trail with boardwalks over muddy areas, and restoring the stone dust trail to its original condition.

More news: the new exercise stations are in. Scouts will install wider and longer walkways over the muddiest areas on 9/23! Parks & Rec is working with the Water Dept. to divert stormwater under the trail near Zervas. And P&R will put new stone dust on some of the most eroded areas near Zervas and between Beacon St. and the dog park. To continue & expedite added improvements, we’re forming Friends of Cold Spring Park. Will update you when that’s underway & we can accept tax-deductuble donations!

Pleased to report that we just had a very good meeting with Parks & Rec Commissioner Bob DeRubeis, staffperson Stephanie Lapham, & Councilors Downs, Rice, and Danberg. P&R has already removed old exercise stations & cut out dead roots. New stations going in in August; extended planks over mud in Sept. They will develop a near-term budget & plan for wood chips and/or stone dust for the worst areas & put the trail in the long-term Capital Improvement Plan. Next meeting in August. Thanks all!

Thanks for signing & the many supportive comments. I also have 127 paper signatures gathered on the trail, & will be speaking to the Waban & Highlands Area Councils & the Conservators. Parks & Rec says exercise stations will be replaced this summer, and a Boy Scout will install more planks over the muddiest sections in the Fall. They then hope to add stone dust at a few of the roughest areas. A good start, though I’ve also heard about past unfulfilled promises, so let’s keep going! Thanks!
