Australian farmers from the state of Queensland want the government to establish a market for kangaroo meat with China.
Farmers from drought affected areas say the wild kangaroo population is reaching plague proportions and adding pressure to drought-affected land.
However, animal activists argue there are more humane ways of managing kangaroo populations and that the culling methods currently used are inherently cruel.
A ‘humane death’ is considered one where the animal dies instantaneously through a clean shot to the head. However, the current culling method of shooting small moving targets makes this method difficult.
Kangaroos can suffer a long and agonizing death from bullet wounds. Joeys are often killed or left to die when their mothers are shot.
There are non-lethal alternatives to manage kangaroo populations. Alternative measures include birth control, relocation, and other non-lethal solutions.
