Support Colorado's Anti-Fracking Ballot Measures!
Two November ballot measures could help local citizens stop fracking in their Colorado communities if citizens vote them through.
Concerns over water pollution and seismic activities linked to fracking have grown in recent years and local community advocates in Colorado and across the country are pressing for a greater say in the approval and siting of fracking wells.
In Colorado, grassroots activists collected nearly 200,000 signatures for these new ballot measures. The first, Initiative 75, would authorize local governments to oversee oil and gas drilling operations. The second, Initiative 78, would require fracking to take place at least 2,500 feet away from occupied buildings, waterways and public areas such as parks. Each measure would help keep Coloradans safe from the polluting effects of fracking.
As important as passing these measures is to Coloradans, approval of the state's fracking ballot measures would also send a powerful message about the importance of local decisionmaking in the development of fracking and other potentially hazardous energy projects.
The state has until September 7th to approve the ballot measures, but the industry has already raised over $13 million to fight them. The support of Colorado legislators could well make the difference in whether they are passed, but lawmakers need to hear from concerned people like us if they are going to raise their voices in support of these important measures.
We need a massive outpouring of public support for these measures if they are to become law. Please sign the petition to urge Colorado legislators to approve the ballot measures and show pro-fracking groups that citizens' votes are paramount to big business!
Colorado State Legislators:
I am encouraged that two November ballot measures could help local citizens stop fracking in their Colorado communities if citizens vote them through.
Grassroots activists collected nearly 200,000 signatures for the ballot measures. The first, Initiative 75, would authorize local governments to oversee oil and gas drilling operations. The second, Initiative 78, would require fracking to take place at least 2,500 feet away from occupied buildings, waterways and public areas such as parks. This would keep citizens safe from the polluting effects of fracking.
We understand that the state have until September 7th to approve the ballot measures, but the industry has already raised over $13 million to fight them. I respectfully urge you to endorse these ballot measures and show pro-fracking groups that citizens' votes are paramount to big business.
