California Department of Transportation has installed deadly netting on the Petaluma River and Lakeville Highway bridges that has trapped or killed over one hundred federally protected birds in a Sonoma County highway development project.
Over 100 migrating cliff swallows, barn swallows and white-throated swifts have been trapped and killed in netting that Caltrans is using under bridges to prevent them from nesting on bridges. Caltran contractors are inhumanely, and illegally, knocking down unfinished nests.
Tell California Governor Jerry Brown to reqire Caltrans to use non-lethal alternatives and make space for protected wildlife alongside human development- as is the law for federally protected migratory birds and other wildlife. It is illegal to kill protected migratory birds or disturb their nests.
