There are only 650 golden eagles left in Japan, but the United States Marines plan to fly their controversial hybrid Osprey right through the eagles' habitat. Mountain hawk eagles and ptarmigans, also on the endangered list, live along the route planned for a low-flying Osprey as well.
Japanese environmentalists are justifiably up in arms. The Nature Conservation Society of Japan isn't just worried about collisions. They think the noise and pollution associated with the Osprey--which is part jet, part helicopter--are enough to drive the birds closer to extinction. According to an article in the Japan Times, the Ospreys will fly as low as 60 meters above the ground. The Times also notes that the Osprey has a checkered safety record.
Tell the US Marines to change the Osprey's flight path so that it doesn't harm endangered Japanese birds!
It appears that the flight route you have planned for the controversial Osprey goes through the habitat of endangered Japanese birds--the golden eagle, ptarmigan, and mountain hawk eagle.
Your plans to fly the Osprey as close as sixty meters above the earth poses a serious danger to these already extremely vulnerable birds. Also of concern are the noise and pollution associated with these jets as well as their spotty safety record. It also does not appear that these flights aim to accomplish much more than providing practice.
Please change the Osprey routes so that they do not bring Japanese birds any closer to extinction than they already are.
