The Miracle of Damascus (also known as Our Lady of Soufanieh) refers to a series of extraordinary spiritual phenomena that have been observed at Soufanieh, a suburb of Damascus in Syria, between 1982 and 2004. These phenomena are centered around the woman Myrna Nazzour. They began on November 27, 1984 when oil started to flow from a small paper image of the Virgin Mary in the house of the Nazzour family. According to sources, effusions of oil have since been observed on liturgical feast days, either on the aforementioned image, reproductions of that image, or on the hands and face of Mrs. Nazzour. This oil has been analysed by six laboratories in Syria and Europe and was found to be 100% pure olive oil.
In addition to the olive oil various other miracles have been reported:
- Myrna has received stigmata on the Holy Thursdays of the years 1984, 1987, 1990 and 2001, i.e. the years in which the date of the celebration of Easter among Catholics and Orthodox coincided. These have been confirmed by a number of doctors who were present.
- Healings, among others, from cancer and blindness, as well as conversions.
- Apparitions and messages from Jesus and the Virgin Mary have also been reported.
The content of the messages Myrna has experienced came either from the Virgin Mary or from Jesus Christ, were: the necessity of the return to God; love, penitence, joy, mutual forgiveness, and sanctity; the necessity of evangelization, of the unity of the family and of the church.
Myrna reported that the Virgin Mary said: “The church is the kingdom of the heavens on earth. Whoever has divided it, has sinned, and whoever has rejoiced in its division has also sinned.”
