Royal Dutch Shell cancelled plans to drill for oil this year in the Arctic's Beaufort and Chukchi Seas, known as Polar Bear Seas- home to the entire U.S. population of polar bears and a vital migration route for bowhead and beluga whales.
Shell has shown it is not prepared and cannot be trusted to operate safely and contain oil spills in the unpredictable and challenging Arctic environment. Their oil spill containment equipment failed a test under calm conditions.
We are relieved that Shell will not be able to drill for oil this year in Polar Bear Seas, but we need a permanant solution. Drilling for oil in the Artic is an expensive and risky mistake. Place a permanant ban on oil drilling in the Arctic.
