Tell 2008 Presidential Candidates Your Ideas About Nuclear Nonproliferation
The greatest security threat todaynot just for the United States, or for the West, but for the worldis the possibility that a terrorist group could acquire a nuclear weapon and set it off in a major city.
Leaders in the White House, the Congress and in the community of nations have repeatedly acknowledged the threat of a terrorist nuclear attack. They have used inspiring words and made solemn commitments to counter the danger. But our collective deeds have not matched our wordswe need to reinvigorate our actions at home and abroad.
To address the threat of nuclear terrorism and weapons proliferation, the United States must strengthen international nuclear agreements, including through the United Nations.
In order to successfully keep the world safe from nuclear weapons, the United States must do the following:
Reduce the global supply of nuclear weapons through arms reduction and nonproliferation initiatives.
Limit the spread of nuclear weapons technology.
Globally secure nuclear weapons material such as plutonium and highly enriched uranium to the highest possible standard.
Implement a multi-state effort to address the root causes of discontent underlying radical Islam.
Now it's your turn. Sign this petition today to tell the 2008 presidential candidates what you think they should do, On Day One of their Administration, to protect against a nuclear attack and stop proliferation.
Participants of OnDayOne.org have contributed their ideas for working toward worldwide nuclear nonproliferation. Here is one of those ideas:
Recommit to the Anti-Ballistic Missile (ABM) Treaty. In order to have a serious discussion with nations like Iran and North Korea about limiting nuclear technology and weapons, we need to lead by example.
