Alberta: Eliminate Unrestricted Hunting of Wolves

In the province of Alberta there are currently no restrictions on the hunting of wolves. Not only are the methods of hunting wolves unrestricted but the number of wolves that can be hunted is also limitless.

The current methods of hunting and trapping wolves is inhumane and unnecessary. Currently, wolves can be "baited" with large carcasses to bring the wolves to the hunters. They then use snares, such as the brutal and indiscriminate neck snares, in order to trap the wolves. These methods are cruel and needless. New regulations should reflect the "fair game" principles of hunting (ie: no baiting) and ban cruel practices such as neck snares.

Wolves are an integral part of any healthy ecosystem. They manage ungulate populations so that deer, elk and other ungulates do not overgraze an ecosystem and destroy the area. Wolf populations in Alberta are healthy right now and their populations must be maintained in a better way in order to ensure the preservation of this healthy ecosystem balance. New regulations to ensure that overhunting does not occur must be put into place.

To Shannon Phllips,

As someone who cares greatly for the natural world I urge you to eliminate unrestricted hunting on wolves in Alberta. Wolves are an integral part of a healthy ecosystem. They regulate the ungulate population and prevent them from overgrazing and destroying ecosystems.

Regulations in hunting protect a population and work within known research to provide realistic and healthy hunting regulations. In Alberta, the wolf population is at a healthy point and regulating the hunting of wolves will allow for the population to stay healthy.

As well, there are some concerning practices for hunting wolves including baiting and the use of neck snares which are harmful not only to wolves but to other wildlife. Regulating hunting methods of wolves is important for the long term health of the wildlife in the province.
