Victory! The Southern California city of Ojai just became the first city in the nation to formally recognize the rights of an animal! The City of Council voted to protect elephants from being imprisoned against their will within city limits. This sets a potentially amazing precedent for so many other animals held in captivity, like Happy the Elephant. Now, we must encourage the whole state of California to follow in Ojai's footsteps!

Working with animal rights groups, the Ojai City Council passed a historic vote to protect elephants from the horrific conditions of captivity. It is no secret that these majestic, deeply social creatures are not meant to be confined to tiny cages. In the wild, some elephants can roam as far as 11,000 kilometers within their "home range."
Clearly, these animals are sentient and deserve their own legal rights.
Ojai's actions are a start. Now the state of California must lead the nation by enshrining the rights of non-human animals into law!
