Protect Corals, Fish and Whales From Ocean Acidification
Without swift, national action to protect the ocean's vast diversity of life from acidifying waters we stand to lose corals, shellfish, salmon and a whole host of beautiful creatures we care about.
We need your help to ask President Barack Obama and the Environmental Protection Agency to get working on a bold plan to curb ocean acidification.
Just as pollution from factories and cars is befouling our air, carbon dioxide pollution is also being absorbed by the ocean, causing its chemistry to change and become more acidic. This spells trouble for marine animals that are now having difficulty building shells, growing and sometimes even surviving in increasingly corrosive waters.
Take action now to save our oceans from a bleak future. Everything from the smallest of plankton to the largest of whales has a stake in what the White House and the EPA decide to do about ocean acidification.
Dear [Decision Maker],
It's time for the EPA to act to save our sea life! Protect our coastal ecosystems and communities from ocean acidification. If the EPA waits too long, the impacts on our oceans -- their coral reefs, fisheries and other marine life -- could be devastating.
The President and the EPA have the power to prevent the harmful impacts of ocean acidification. We urge the EPA to use its authority under the Clean Water Act to:
-- develop a national plan to address ocean acidification;
-- identify waters impaired by ocean acidification;
-- monitor our coastal ecosystems, coral reefs and fisheries for impacts.
We support swift and decisive action to curb CO2 pollution that is threatening to change the oceans as we know them -- teeming with rich, colorful life.
