A Tasmanian music festival is planning to have an artist slaughter a live bull before the performance begins.
Dark Mofo, an annual music festival put on by the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA), scheduled the bloody event for June 17th. Artist Hermann Nitsch will perform the animal sacrifice. According to Dark Mofo's creative director Leigh Carmichael, "The Hermann Nitsch work in question uses meat, fish, fruit and blood, live performers and an orchestra as part of the performance. The animal to be used is specifically on the market for slaughter."
Regardless of how the animal is sourced, sacrificing it in a public display trivializes animal life and celebrates cruelty. Slaughtering animals for public spectacle is not original. Acts like this desensitize the audience and encourage copycat performances where animals might not be humanely sourced or killed.
