While Australia -- where dirty coal is the country's second biggest export -- tried to sway the report to keep coal fired plants, Brazil -- one of the biggest producers of beef in the world -- advocated against the inclusion of animal agriculture in the report. The IPCC is our best shot at a clear, unbiased picture of climate risk and how to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to give a future to our children. Science has shown for years that high-meat diets and coal use are destroying the planet. Yet these governments see the IPCC as a political game where they can manipulate scientific reports to protect their interests.
Report after report has confirmed that poor nations of the Global South will suffer the worst consequences of climate change the most quickly. Scientists say that these impacts will be so severely felt by the world's marginalized that it could create a climate apartheid. Yet government officials representing Switzerland and Australia both attempted to sway the IPCC against suggesting funding be given to developing countries to help reduce emissions and mitigate climate change's worst effects.
The IPCC is our most valuable resource at understanding what causes climate change and how we can stop it.
