Tell Canada’s government to cap oil and gas emissions
As wildfires burn, Big Oil must be held accountable for its climate pollution.
Communities across Canada and the world are facing an increase in fossil-fueled climate disasters like wildfires, floods, and deadly heat waves. This year, the town of Jasper, Alberta joined the growing list of communities that have been devastated by wildfire – displacing residents, destroying homes, impacting local economies and ravaging the natural environment beloved by those communities.
The most important thing we can do to curb the intensifying effects of wildfires and other extreme weather events is to take urgent and meaningful action on climate change. That means reducing our greenhouse gas emissions as quickly as
possible.
The oil and gas industry is Canada's largest and fastest-growing source of emissions, and there is currently no limit on the amount of climate pollution it can emit. The federal government must act now to regulate emissions from the sector in order to meet our climate goals.
A new regulation is in the works to cap oil and gas emissions – but the government has been dragging its heels.
Send a message to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault and Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson. Urge them to regulate the oil and gas industry with a strong emissions cap – no more delays.
Addressing the climate crisis requires everyone to get on board. Individual Canadians and many other sectors of the economy are already doing their part; now we must hold the oil and gas industry accountable to do its fair share.
Dear [Recipient Name],
As someone who cares deeply about ensuring a liveable climate, I was pleased to see the federal government's plan to cap emissions from the oil and gas industry. I strongly support this important climate policy and urge you to move forward with it as quickly as possible.
While other sectors and individual Canadians like me have been making progress to reduce our climate pollution, emissions from the oil and gas industry continue to rise.
The government must take bold action to ensure the industry does its fair share to help meet our climate goals.
To be effective, the oil and gas emissions cap must:
- Be ambitious – Experts say the oil and gas sector should be required to reduce emissions by 60% by 2030. At a minimum, the emissions cap must align with Canada's national goal of reducing emissions by 40-45% by 2030.
- Close loopholes – There must be strict rules to ensure the industry actually reduces its emissions, without loopholes that let companies off the hook.
- Be implemented without delay – The regulation must be expedited to ensure it is in force by 2025. If we wait any longer, it will be too late to meet our 2030 climate goals.
Canadians have waited long enough for the oil and gas industry to reduce its emissions. Please move quickly to introduce an emissions cap and help protect our communities from the worst impacts of climate change.
Sincerely,
