Urge Governor Hickenlooper to implement the Colorado Water Plan
Experts predict that Colorado's population will double in the next ten years. That amount of population growth will result in a level of demand on our water supply and on our economy that we simply cannot sustain. Unless we learn how to better manage our resources to do more with less, we will face a water crisis.
Colorado's Water Plan, finalized last November, includes a set of criteria to ensure that any new water projects don't harm our environment. These common sense criteria require that projects are sustainable, cost-effective, meet real needs, and have community input.
Unfortunately, six months after the plan's release we still don't have a clear plan in place to implement the criteria – it's time that Colorado starts implementing the Water Plan and the criteria is a great place to start.
The state needs a transparent and public process for applying the Water Plan criteria in order to ensure we are spending public funds wisely and protecting our water resources.
We worked hard to develop a water plan that reflects our water values and our rivers, so let's put that plan into use. Urge Governor Hickenlooper to use the Water Plan criteria to advance smart and innovative solutions.
Dear Governor Hickenlooper,
I am so glad Colorado's Water Plan includes a robust set of criteria. These criteria ensure that any new water project is sustainable, cost-effective, meets real needs, and has community input.
As a state, we worked hard to develop a State Water Plan that realigned Colorado's water trajectory. It is time now to put that hard work into place by applying the criteria for state support enumerated in Chapter 9 to all project proposals. We are all in this together, and need to make sure that the state is only investing in or endorsing projects that use limited public resources wisely, protect rivers and wildlife, and reflect community values.
