It is said that every second of everyday, animal cruelty occurs. The OSPCA investigates roughly 17,000 allegations of animal cruelty. The penalties for persons guilty of an offence can vary from $1000 to $60,000 with possible imprisonment of up to two years. I feel that this is not nearly enough punishment for cruelty against a living thing. If someone kills a human they go to jail for much longer than two years, why should animals be any different.
On Tuesday, July 17, 2012, my family dog of thirteen years was brutally taken from us. At around 1:30 in the afternoon, my dog was laying outside, laying in the shade, on a beautiful summer day. When someone snuck up on her and strangled her with her own leash. If that wasn’t enough, they poured gasoline on her and lit her on fire. If you’re an animal lover like my mother you can imagine the panic and emotion she felt when she came outside only to find our dog laying on the grass in a ball of fire. The worst part about this is that it occurred in the middle of the day and there was no witnesses, or if there was no one has come forward. What kind of sick individual could even think about doing this to harmless, helpless animal. Over the past week, both me and my sister have had an outcry of sympathy and condolences from close friends , family and even people who have heard about the story but don’t even know us, in person and over social media, which is why I thought starting this petition is a good idea. If all the people that have already shared their condolences sign this, and their friends sign it, and their friends, maybe we will have enough signatures to get through to the Ontario government and they will change the laws.
So if you are an animal lover like me, my mom and my sister, or just feel completely outraged and sickened about my story, please do your part and help fight the cause to stop animal cruelty, sign this petition.
