Rep. Matt Gaetz resigned abruptly from Congress after news broke that Donald Trump would be nominating him — a man who has been credibly accused of sex trafficking underage girls — to the position of Attorney General, our nation's highest law enforcement officer.
But it quickly became clear that there was something else at play. The House Oversight Committee was on the cusp of releasing the results of its years-long investigation into Matt Gaetz and the accusations made against him — and by resigning, Gaetz was able to block the release of the report.
Release the Gaetz report ASAP!
It is absurd that Gaetz should be able to escape the music by simply resigning from Congress. Taxpayers dollars were spent to compile that report, and the taxpayers deserve to be able to see the results.
Josh Sorbe, a spokesperson for Democrats on the Judiciary Committee, said that Gaetz "shouldn't be able to resign away an ethics investigation involving allegations of grave misconduct, especially when he will be nominated to be our country's top law enforcement officer." He's absolutely right.
Tell Congress to release the Matt Gaetz report!
