I have been very interested in foxes and have always wanted one as a pet, I live in Texas and figured the Fennec Fox would be a perfect pet for where I live due to the hot temperatures. I looked at the laws and at first they said all native foxes were illegal, so I was still in the clear because a fennec fox is native to North Africa. However when I dove deeper into tpwd.texas.gov I found out that it says all foxes are illegal. You can only have them if you purchase a Fur Bearing License. The options of this are for trapping, hunting, educational, or breeding to sell. None allowed to have one as a pet. I emailed them dozens of times asking if this meant fennec foxes or just native?why they only allowed breeding out of state?and if there was a person I could get in touch with to ask for a petition? No answers. I emailed a couple of breeders asking the specifics in owning this beautiful animal. No answers. This broke my heart. I've been trying for months trying to find an exception, but there was none. I just didn't understand how they are allowed to be bred, but only sold to out of state customers. These foxes can be fully domesticated and are allowed as pets all through the US(Florida, New York, Indiana) just to name a few.If this animal is allowed as a companion animal in New York possibly staying in tiny apartments, it should be allowed in Texas. This animal is the size of a small dog sometimes smaller then a average cat,can be fully domesticated, very loving, and very energetic. They are designed for the heat, known distinctively for their huge ears used to dissipate heat. I'm not the only one who has been begging for them to be legal in Texas. I see breeders posting announcements how they are sorry that they can't sell to state residents, discussion boards on how this was a recent change(not entirely sure if that's true, but I read it), and how the laws specifying this fox are very fuzzy when asked about, even for the people that created said laws. I beg you to sign this petition to make these precious animals legal. Even if I had to purchase a licence, I wouldn't care. As long as I can own and care for one as a companion I would be happy, and I'm sure it would help a lot of Texas breeders businesses to be able to sell in their own state. Thank you so much!
