Millions of dollars have been pumped into developing a large palm oil development in Tanzania, according to a story on Mongabay.com
The 10,000-hectare palm oil project will be located in the Ruvu River Basin, near Tanzania’s commercial capital, Dar es Salaam. The region includes critical wildlife habitat for many endangered species and much of its coastal area qualifies as a biodiversity hotspot.
Large areas of the Ruvu River Basin are specifically outlined as Birdlife Endemic Areas – and the ranges of two or more bird species that are found nowhere else in the world overlap.
In addition, the area contains the only known habitat for Loveridge's sunbird, which is listed by the IUCN as endangered due primarily to habitat loss.
Because of this, its range – which is located around the Ruvu's headwaters - is listed as a critical conservation site by the Alliance for Zero Extinction. A massive palm oil plantation could push the species to extinction.
The endangered animals and biodiverse forests of Tanzania deserve protection. Will you join me in urging the government of Tanzania not to allow a giant palm oil plantation to go ahead in order to spare endangered animals and the biodiverse forests that will be endangered and destroyed by the plantation?
