Over the past two months, a terrifying situation has been unfolding:
Lay's potato chips have been recalled as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified the danger at the highest level, otherwise known as a 'Class 1' recall.
According to the federal agency, a Class 1 recall means
the product could "cause serious adverse health consequences or death."Apparently, the recall has to do with milk accidentally cross-contaminating some of the brand's potato chips --
a serious allergen that, if left undeclared, could seriously harm or kill someone who unknowingly consumes it!Thankfully, the FDA and Frito-Lay worked quickly and efficiently together, and because of this careful oversight, there have been
no reported allergic reactions. Sign the petition if you support the FDA and all it does to keep consumers like us safe!This is government oversight at its finest. One of the many things that the FDA is tasked with is keeping people safe when things like this go wrong, and the agency did just that. The safety of our food, the efficacy of our medicine, and our well-being when we use cosmetic and hygiene products are all dependent on the FDA's ability to do its job.
That's why we're so concerned about Trump's plans to strip government agencies of their power. We've known about these plans since his first presidential term. They've been amplified in Project 2025, and confirmed in his slew of egregious executive orders issued just days into his second term.
But this Lay's incident is a clear and timely reminder: we need to keep the FDA free to do its job so it can keep us safe!During Trump's first term, "the FDA sent significantly fewer "warning letters" and carried out fewer other enforcement actions" than the Obama administration. According to the NRDC, "a deadly 2018 outbreak of E. coli linked to romaine lettuce occurred after the Trump administration suspended enforcement of a rule banning the irrigation of vegetables with manure-contaminated water."
Trump's pick to head up the Department of Health and Human Services, which the FDA falls under, is Robert F. Kennedy Jr. -- a notorious science-denier who has espoused dangerous misinformation about the safety and efficacy of lifesaving vaccines.
With RFK Jr. at the helm, we shudder to think what the outcome of this Lay's recall may have been.There is simply too much at stake to indiscriminately gut federal regulations that are in place to keep us safe. We deserve better than what Trump is threatening, and that's why we must come together and remind him who he works for -- the people.
