My fellow residents of North Richland Hills,
Update: We have scheduled further discussion on potentital changes in the chicken ordinance for October 9, 2023 at 7:00 pm.
In the meantime, staff will evaluate other area ordinance and the collected input from citizens and propose options for consideration of any amendments desired by the City Council.
At the October 9th Work Session, the City Council will "by consenus" provide direction regarding any changes to the city ordinances for consideration as well as the process and timing for any potential changes.
Original Post:
I come to you with an urgent plea from the depths of my heart. As homeowners in this city, we wish for the simple opportunity to keep chickens in our backyards. We have seen that many other cities in the area allow this, and we believe it is only fair that we too should have the chance to enjoy this wholesome practice.
We understand that certain restrictions would be necessary to ensure everyone's comfort and safety, such as limits on the number of chickens and requirements for secure fencing. We wholeheartedly embrace these guidelines and assure you that we would abide by them diligently.
For over a decade, I have been a proud resident of North Richland Hills, upholding its laws and regulations with utmost respect. Recently, we were devastated to receive a visit from the Animal Control officer, responding to a complaint about our cherished backyard chickens. These lovely creatures have been a part of our lives for the past 13 years, and during that time, they have not only brought joy to our family but also served our community and neighbors in meaningful ways.
These chickens have been cared for like members of our family, ensuring they have nutritious food, clean water, and a well-maintained coop. It is no exaggeration to say that they live in better conditions than many people do—they have a true chicken mansion! Their presence has allowed us to donate fresh eggs to local churches, neighbors, and those in need, providing a source of nourishment and happiness to countless individuals.
Now, I stand before you heartbroken, learning that our cherished chickens are not permitted within the city limits. We had no idea about this restriction, and the thought of parting with them is agonizing. Countless neighbors and churches vouch for the peaceful and positive influence these chickens bring to our community. There hasn't been a single complaint about them; they simply bring love and joy.
I implore you all to support our cause by signing the petition that is currently underway. Every signature counts and will be eternally appreciated. Please help us spread the word and share the link to the petition. Our fight for our beloved chickens is a fight for unity, compassion, and the freedom to care for our own.
Moreover, I humbly request your presence at the upcoming city council meeting on the October 9th at 7:00 p.m. The meeting will take place on the 3rd floor of North Richland Hills City Hall. Your support in person will make a tremendous difference, showing the council how much this means to our community.
Please join the group "Backyard Chickens of North Richland Hills" to stay informed and connected. I'm overwhelmed and unsure where to start, but I know that together, we can make a difference. Losing my chickens wouldn't just impact me, but it would also affect my neighbors and the broader community.
Let us come together, united by compassion and a desire to uphold our community's values. Let us show the council how important this is to us. Please, I earnestly urge each and every one of you to stand with us and support our cause. Together, we can ensure that our beloved chickens remain part of our lives and continue making a positive impact in North Richland Hills.
