Ban Lion Meat in the U.S.!
A Wichita, Kansas restaurant recently made headlines for planning to serve real lion meat as part of an exotic dinner. They thankfully canceled the dish, but some restaurants and online vendors continue to sell tacos, steaks and burgers made from lions raised on legal U.S. farms.
Lions are a vulnerable wild species native to South Africa. Conservationists are worried about the species' health, as hundreds of lions per year are killed for trophies or use in traditional Asian medicine. Raising lions on U.S. farms for meat creates a demand that will threaten the species further. Clearly, lion meat is an unsustanable food choice.
It is cruel to raise lions on U.S. farms where they are unable to run and hunt as they would in their natural environment. Please urge the U.S. Department of Agriculture to ban lion meat in the U.S.
To: U.S. Department of Agriculture
We, the undersigned, are concerned with the ongoing sales of lion meat in the U.S., as well as the existence of legal lion farms.
Lions are a vulnerable wild species native to South Africa. It is cruel to raise lions on U.S. farms where they are unable to run and hunt as they would in their natural environment. We believe that most citizens would be upset to learn about the sales and consumption of lion meat in the U.S. We respectfully urge you to ban the practice of raising lions for their meat and serving or selling lion meat in the United States. Thank you for taking the time to read and consider our petition.
